If you’re a designer, artist, or builder, you’re likely familiar with Pantone and its annual color of the year. That color helps define style for the year, and it’s a pretty big deal for everyone associated with those industries. This year’s color is called Living Coral, and was inspired by the beauty of coral and the natural world. “An animating and life-affirming coral hue with a golden undertone that energizes and enlivens with a softer edge.” That sentiment carries over to flooring and interior design, with specific colors dominating trends in design each year.
You might be thinking that flooring and interior design companies stick to a handful of neutral colors for their palettes, but you’d be mistaken. There are hundreds of colors and flooring combinations to pick from. For example, one of our flooring suppliers, Shaw Floors, picks a color palette that they promote each year that complements and works with the Pantone color. This year, their preferred palette is “Whisper,”which includes neutral colors with an undertone of pastels and includes colors like “Glacier Ice,” “Mist,” “Blush,” “Clay,” and “Dusty Lilac,” which can be used in the paint color, accent pieces, or the flooring itself.
Mark Woodman of Mark Woodman Design+Color introduces “real-life” color and design that helps balance practical application with the excitement of new things. For example, “Happy!” which focuses on creating a space that makes you feel good and includes bright primary colors. “Considered” is a trend focused on feelings of relaxation and comfort. They include color, but are based on grey as a base and are soft and focus on more matte and brushed finishes.“Engaged” is inspired by our time in the community and of serving others. The colors are bright but somewhat muted such as rust, plum and teal.
