In Need of a Change

Before & After: A Fort Collins Kitchen Remodel to Update Tired Kitchen Tile & Butcher Block

The most important feature of a livable kitchen is food safety. We want to make sure that surfaces are clean so we don’t contaminate our food! Well, what if the very nature of your countertops attracts and supports bacteria? That was the case in this home.

These days, there are countless styles and materials used to make tile countertops, backsplashes, and floors. We’ve made strides to correct the pitfalls of grout. However, if you’ve got an older tile countertop, the chances are that the porous grout harbors bacteria (and how annoying is it to have to reseal the darn thing every year!?). If you’re dead set on another tile countertop, never fear, panels or slabs of tile with epoxy grout specifically designed for countertops and without grout joints will remedy this issue. In the case of this home, however, the tile was dated and stained!

Alternative to Tile

The homeowners, with the aid of our specialists, decided to replace their tile countertops with Silestone®. Silestone® has all the benefits of tile, with none of the drawbacks. It is resistant to scratches, stains, and bacteria with no problematic grout. Silestone® has the beauty of natural stone, but is non-porous and made of a hybrid of minerals and recycled materials. It comes in a great variety of colors. On this project, the client chose Lena/Roqui. The clean subtlety of the countertops allows the beauty of the hardwood floors to become more apparent.

Or Just Stick With It!

The old backsplash was simply an extension of the countertop tile. We’re not sure who came up with the idea to put one material on multiple surfaces, but this new approach is much more fun! The family opted for a glass tile backsplash from Glazzio Tiles. Glass tiles don’t get discolored, and they are easy to keep clean. They are impervious to water and their “vibrancy and depth of color combined with the reflective quality of glass results in a unique and dramatic effect.” The homeowners chose to go with a Queen’s Lair style of tile in Honey Harvest. The modern, glass backsplash complements the subtlety of the countertops and gives the whole kitchen an invigorating pop.

Ye Olde Butcher Block

Butcher block islands are never going to go out of style completely. Country Living reminds us they are easy on your knives and dishes, and “the soft surface also makes for a quieter kitchen.” However, they are extremely susceptible to stains, scratches, and dents, and we all know that bacteria love those! In addition, to properly care for your butcher block, you’ll need to regularly oil the wood.

Brand New Island

To replace the old butcher block, this family chose to go with a Cambria® Quartz island. Quartz is another non-porous material that is gorgeous yet durable. It is difficult to stain, scratch or dent, and it’s simple to care for and food safe. Additionally, Cambria® Quartz comes in countless  appealing patterns. This family chose the popular Nevern, but there is a design for every taste. From light to bright to dark, from understated to ostentatious, Quartz is stunning and functional at the same time. The Nevern here gives the whole kitchen a clean, yet luxurious, and refreshing look.
