Laminate flooring is popular, and for good reason! It’s easy to install, affordable and includes a clear protective top layer. Plus, they look amazing! One of the benefits of having laminate flooring is how easy they are to clean and maintain. There are a few things you can do to keep your laminate flooring looking new!

1. Vacuum and Mop Regularly

Run a vacuum over your floors regularly. Clean out the crumbs, pet hair and dirt that gets stuck in your flooring’s crevices. Vacuuming keeps dirt off the floor to prevent anything from scratching and dulling your floors.

Use a wet mop about once a month. Heavily-trafficked areas might need mopping more regularly. Spray with a laminate-safe flooring spray and mop with a microfiber, washable mop head. You can research safe cleansing products for your laminate floors. Usually the flooring manufacturer has recommendations. Don’t polish or wax your laminate floor, and don’t use water to mop your floors. Also, avoid abrasive cleaners and tools so you don’t scratch the protective layer.

2. Use DIY Laminate Flooring Cleaner

In addition to using laminate-safe flooring cleaner, you can also make your own. To create a regular cleaner, combine a teaspoon of clear, unscented dish soap with a gallon of hot water. You can also create a cleaner to remove the waxy buildup that accumulates over time. Combine a gallon of hot water with a cup of white vinegar. Vinegar is a natural cleaning agent that breaks down the film without hurting the laminate surface. As noted earlier, don’t use too much liquid on your floor. Your mop should be slightly damp and not soaked.

3. Clean Up Spills

If anything spills, clean it up quickly. You don’t want liquids to stand on your floors and cause damage. For tougher spills, such as oil, paint, markers, lipstick, ink or tar, use acetone/nail polish remover on a clean white cloth. Then wipe the area with a damp cloth to remove any remaining residue. It’s always a good idea to test in an inconspicuous area.

4. Protect Your Floors

Place rugs at your front and back doors and any other high-traffic areas. You can also place a welcome mat outside for people to wipe their feet. Grimey shoes can dirty, dull and scratch your laminate flooring. Use furniture pads to protect floors from scratches. If you have furry family members, clip your pet’s nails to prevent scratches.

Laminate floors are built to last. Taking care of your floors can keep them looking new for years to come!
